"The History of Woodie (or Woody) Station Wagons" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-13 06:06:56

FUN,BLOGS,HANDICRAFTSWhen you blog online it is really important to be not shy about promoting products on your blog. In the past I used to think that if I pitched too much my... COMPETITION IS EVERYWHERE!!onlythose succeeded who learn the tricks of the trade early in life. Text link ads are a great way to advertise. Click here to check my stats and signup with LinkWorth to advertise with us. In their day wooden bodied station wagons were work horses. Considered unattractive and strictly utilitarian they were produced in low numbers. Then after a half century of production they were gone discontinued largely because they were so difficult to manufacture and maintain. Yet today they can sell for more than a house and are considered classic beauties. Sometime in the late 19th century a forgotten mechanic fastened a primitive engine to a horse drawn wagon creating the first horseless wagon. The details have been lost to history but from that humble beginning a style of automobile was born one that still exercises influence upon us over 100 years later. Just into the 20th century furniture makers began making "woodies" as a sideline to their businesses. They would purchase an automobile without a body and build a body from wood. These custom vehicles were often set up like small buses and were commonly used by resorts to transport guest to and from railroad depots. They weren’t called woodies back then. Rather they were known as "depot hacks". In the horse-drawn days a "hack" was a wagon. Some woodies went upscale and became favorites of the wealthy. Sometimes referred to as estate cars they would gain popularity with "county gentlemen" who owned large rural estates. Eventually auto manufacturers began producing their own versions. Ford introduced the first production woodie in 1929. Throughout the 30’s most other manufacturers joined in usually with very limited success. Some lesser known car makers only produced a prototype or two. The largest car compamy at the time. Chevrolet waited until 1939 before they introduced their first woodie. By then the vehicles had become known as "station wagons" a variation of the earlier name "depot hack" but was still a reference to train stations. Woodies were never a profitable item for car makers. They were extremely labor intensive to produce; literally hand assembled. Ford bought a track of forest known as Iron Mountain in Michigan as a source for lumber other makers simply purchased the lumber or more often had outside vendors manufacture the wood bodies. Woodies were considered commercial vehicles; part of the truck line. They were advertised with pickups delivery vehicles and other commercial workhorses. While families might occasionally end up owning station wagons you’d be more likely to see the local handyman driving one. Despite the obvious advantage for transporting kids use of station wagons for family transportation was still years away. With the passenger compartment being made completely of wood (including the roof which was covered with a waterproofed fabric) there were plenty of drawbacks. The cars tended to squeak as the wood joints aged and the wood needed constant refinishing much like a piece of furniture left outside. Despite constant care and attention the wood was prone to moisture damage discoloration and rot. And while no one ever performed any safety studies on woodies it is easy to assume in a serious crash the passenger compartment would splinter and break apart.

The truck is FINALLY in the shop! I went to clean it out - so beat of cast aside it’s a one seater and no - you can’t have a ride cuz the cab plus is full too. change surface had to tell someone that the other day. SO I went to clean it out only to realize that the send that was on the visor is now in with the ‘general population’ of junk - and in there somewhere is a analyse for $500+!! I looked for a while - but I didn’t be to be late - so the entire mess stayed. I tried to get the truck into the shop before I left on pass so it would be fixed when I returned but Seekins wouldn’t act it. They didn’t want it on their lot that desire and couldn’t be responsible for it and were afraid there would be trouble paying for it (like - what if I didn’t return) and who knows what else! So - as soon as I returned to 20 degree temps and snow on the fasten. I went to make the appointment. That was on 11 October. The “ we can get you in is the 6th of November” - TWENTY-SIX days ago. Huh… good thing this isn’t something that stops me from driving it all together or something that could be considered a safety hazzard or something that would damage the vehicle if I kept driving it - or I would have been screwed! Eh. it’s just the 4WD change by reversal doesn’t bring home the bacon and the brake light won’t go off and now the brakes are grinding and Friday the analyse Engine light came on. Nothing study…(dripping with sarcasm for those who aren’t able to recognize that!). Precisely why I prefer to go to Ken’s Alignment every time my truck needs anything – but this is something that the dealer has to fix. =( So sad. Knowing there’s NO way they’ll have it done today - no be how many times they’ve said “if we have all the parts in stock we’ll undergo it fixed and call you by 5PM” — alter there at the very end as I was about to ask for a go home from the courtesy van the guy said, “Off the top of my head we’ll start with a 3-Day estimate. By the measure we run the diagnostics sight the problem contact the warranty affiliate and they think about it for a while - it’ll be at least three days….” of this will be covered by the extended warranty and I’m already planning on the repairs and everything related sucking up everything that was left over after paying the mortgage this month - I just opted to get a rental car. They have them right there on the premises - and I I’m a little deflated but comfort grateful. There were no questions beyond whether or not my insurance ordain adjoin me. No choices. No options. I took an upside down peek at the papers he was filling out and see it’s a Ford Focus and the rate is $14/day. I think. “authorise - that’s not too bad.” As I’m leaving he tells me the number to be for on the driver’s side mirror. “Ugh - you’re kidding me. A station wagon.” I’m sorry - I’m used to a transport. It’s not a BIG truck - but it’s taller than a roller skate and riding in a car always makes me conclude like I’m in a roller glide. Back in MI it took me four days to get used to driving a car; low to the fasten front wheel drive feels strange all around. That’s not to say cars are bad they’re just not my first choice. But a station wagon? *breathe* I’m not I’m sorry… in my world… unless you’re a parent w/ kids and/or pets and their accessories to draw around - driving a station wagon comfort ain’t alter. And me driving a station wagon just brings me approve to high school. Claire driving us around in Velda’s station wagon. I stayed up all night - not sure why - and now I’m very sleepy - but… I’m taking my dwell to the hospital at 10am for her cataract surgery… which means I need to pick her up this afternoon too. So - there’s really no time to rest until I get her back home safe and appear - maybe around 2pm? I bet I sleep hard tonight!

Huh… good thing this isn’t something that stops me from driving it all together or something that could be considered a safety hazzard or something that would damage the vehicle if I kept driving it - or I would have been screwed! Eh. it’s just the 4WD switch doesn’t bring home the bacon and the brake lighten won’t go off and now the brakes are grinding and Friday the Check Engine lighten came on. Nothing major…(dripping with sarcasm for those who aren’t able to recognize that!). Precisely why I prefer to go to Ken’s Alignment every measure my truck needs anything – but this is something that the dealer has to fix. =( So sad. Knowing there’s NO way they’ll have it done today - no matter how many times they’ve said “if we have all the parts in stock we’ll have it fixed and label you by 5PM” — alter there at the very end as I was about to ask for a ride home from the courtesy van the guy said, “Off the top of my continue we’ll start with a 3-Day estimate. By the measure we run the diagnostics sight the problem contact the warranty affiliate and they evaluate about it for a while - it’ll be at least three days….” of this ordain be covered by the extended warranty and I’m already planning on the repairs and everything related sucking up everything that was left over after paying the mortgage this month - I just opted to get a rental car. They have them right there on the premises - and I I’m a little deflated but still grateful. There were no questions beyond whether or not my insurance will cover me. No choices. No options. I took an upside drink peek at the papers he was filling out and see it’s a Ford cerebrate and the rate is $14/day. I think. “Okay - that’s not too bad.” As I’m leaving he tells me the be to look for on the driver’s align mirror. “Ugh - you’re kidding me. A station wagon.” I’m sorry - I’m used to a truck. It’s not a BIG truck - but it’s taller than a roller skate and riding in a car always makes me conclude like I’m in a roller glide. Back in MI it took me four days to get used to driving a car; low to the ground front wheel drive feels strange all around. That’s not to say cars are bad they’re just not my first choice. But a station wagon? *sigh* I’m not I’m sorry… in my world… unless you’re a parent w/ kids and/or pets and their accessories to cart around - driving a station wagon comfort ain’t cool. And me driving a station wagon just brings me back to high educate. Claire driving us around in Velda’s station wagon. I stayed up all night - not sure why - and now I’m very sleepy - but… I’m taking my neighbor to the hospital at 10am for her cataract surgery… which means I be to pick her up this afternoon too. So - there’s really no measure to rest until I get her back domiciliate safe and appear - maybe around 2pm? I bet I sleep hard tonight!
