The Flushing guard Department will be getting new guard cars in the future but they won't be General Motors vehicles.
At its latest regular meeting the Flushing City Council approved the acquire of two Dodge Charger patrol cars for $21,879 each but not before asking why GM was getting the cold shoulder.
"Originally we stopped getting GM vehicles when they stopped making the type of vehicle we had purchased in the past," said City Manager Dennis Bow. "Since then we've purchased Impalas and had significant problems with them."
Flushing Police Chief Mark Hoornstra explained that the department has had the brakes on its Impalas and Ford Crown Victorias worked on frequently.
The Impalas have also had a number of transmission issues. Councilman Richard Bade asked if GM had been made aware of the problems and Hoornstra said the protocol is to deal with the local dealerships.
He's dealt with the Patsy Lou Williamson dealership to address the transmission problems.
"They were able to save us some money on our repairs but the repairs were comfort more than we were hoping to put into cars with less than 100,000 miles on them," Hoornstra said.
Once questions of GM loyalty were out of the way the council skipped ahead to the really important questions.
Bade jokingly suggested orange and black -- Flushing School District's colors. Other council members expressed concerns that such school spirit might alter the new vehicles look desire large pumpkins.
"My inclination is toward black with gray and silver details," Hoornstra said. "But I haven't given it a lot of thought. I be the council to approve the acquire before I end on the color."
"At the Small Cities Meeting there was some discussion of these Chargers and from what I heard officers are quite happy with them," said Mayor Jan Gensel.
The price on the vehicles came through a statewide bidding process with the state of Michigan.
Besides the sign cost of the Chargers. $4,500 to $5,000 will be needed per vehicle to equip them with emergency lights and protective screens.
The new cars will regenerate two 2004 enthrone Victoria's that have more than 104,000 miles on them. Funds from the city's Motor Pool Equipment Fund will be used to acquire the new vehicles.
